How much to Spend on Wedding a Gift

Things to Consider when Buying Wedding Gifts

How much should you spend on a Wedding gift? There is not a perfect answer to this question. The typical price range can vary from $30 to $300, depending on many factors. While there is not a perfect amount to spend on a wedding gift, there are certain things to consider when pondering this question.

How much can you afford on a Wedding gift?

Only spend how much you can afford on a Wedding gift! Not only is that important for you, it is also important to the bride and groom. It is hard to receive a gift that you know a guest couldn’t afford.

Did you attend a Bridal Shower or other Wedding Events?

Between engagement presents, bridal showers, Bachelorette and bachelor parties, travel/hotel arrangements and wedding presents, costs can add up fast. Look at the over all picture. Depending on how much has already been spent, you might want to limit how much you spend on the wedding gift.

How close are you to the Bride and Groom?

Typically the closer people are to the bride and groom, the more they spend.

What is the Price Range of the Wedding?

How much will your meal and drinks cost? If you are attending a wedding that is paying $100 a person, you might want to spend a little more on the wedding present. I wouldn’t let this impact your decision greatly, but I’d take it into consideration.

How many weddings do you attend?

Are you attending 5 weddings this summer? If you have several friends and family members getting married, take that into consideration and budget yourself accordantly.

The appropriate amount to spend…

Okay, so let’s get a little technical and make a formula for this question.

After looking into this topic, I would say the average wedding gift costs around $80. Now let’s add in the following factors:

Close Friends and Family Add 20% - 50%             ($96 - $120)
Already spent a lot on pre-parties Subtract 10% - 25% ($60- $72)
Attending an Extravagant Wedding Add 20% - 35% ($96 - $108)
Attending Multiple Weddings Subtract 10% - 25% ($60 - $72)
You can only afford $20 Subtract $60 So spend $20
