Some people know exactly what gift to get another person. However not everyone is so fortunate. Coming up with a general idea for a gift is much harder then actually finding the specific gift once you have some ideas. Of course you can wonder through your local shopping mall going from store to store trying to get some idea of what to purchase, OH I hate shopping. Many people just avoid the unique or creative gift and get the old gift card.

For that special event gift idea, the better you know the person’s normal activities, the easier it is to choose a reasonable gift. Gifts are usually personal items for a specific person to use. So knowing the person’s lifestyle and a little about what they have already, helps a great deal.

There are a few “do not’s” for both men and women. For women, don’t give everyday clothing, kitchen appliances, any appliance or a product used every day for cleaning, washing and ironing. Why do men give women so many bad gifts, because men usually purchase items similar to what they may want in a gift. For men, don’t give toiletries, ties, decorative household items, perfumes, shaving kits or socks.

One suggestion is to try to find something that the person receiving the gift would not purchase themselves because they have the item already. Now the item may be broken, rusted or just outdated. So look for something the person already has and get the next upgrade or one with a new feature or a little better.

So for that unique creative gift idea, here are some suggestions that may help in finding the right gift.

Ask and receive – the best way to get gift ideas is to ask the person for some ideas. Now if they tell you the exact gift, brand, color, size and the store; you are all set to go. This is how men would prefer to shop.

Hobby – a person with a hobby always needs something more. You may have to learn a little about their hobby, but this can be a very good place to look.

Sports – does the person golf, swim, follow any college or professional sports teams? If so, this is another area to consider.

Collector – collecting is similar to a hobby. If someone is collecting beer mugs, they can always use another one. This may require some planning ahead, depending upon the what is being collected.

Gourmet items – this could be simple things like coffee, tea or other similar products that the person uses on a daily basis but usually only buys the ordinary for themselves.

Tasks easier – is there a task or job around the house or office that could be made easier with a new, bigger or better item?

New adventure – is there a new adventure for this person? Maybe he will be doing some traveling, crafting or learning that is new to them. This is a great time to give something related to their new adventure.

One last thought if the above does not help, most all women enjoy jewelry and most all men enjoy tools.  There are also some unconventional gift ideas like play tickets and a national park pass.
